Congratulations, CAMS!

This Saturday, April 21, mock trial teams from Milikan, McBride, Cabrillo, CAMS, and other LBUSD high schools competed in a so-called “mock mock trial” in preparation for the LA County mock trial competition in the fall. Both CAMS and Millikan teams progressed to the final round, but CAMS came out victorious with their first mock trial win, relieving Long Beach Poly of their two-year winning streak.

Among the winners are Catherine Horkay (who also won “Best Witness”), Samantha Doyle-Jacobson, Trevor Schnack, Aria Wesson, Ajay Ascano, Brad Biscocho, Sean Sng, Trevor McGuire, and their advisors, Mr. Almeida and Christian Powell.

All 9th through 12th grade students who are interested in taking Summer School classes to make up a grade to meet graduation requirements or to fulfill college entrance requirements must register using our online enrollment system.  The online system will be available starting Monday, April 9.  Summer School registration will continue until April 27 at 5 p.m.

Current 8th through 11th graders also have the opportunity to take a Math Summer Bridge course to help prepare them for the course work that they will be studying in the coming school year.  These courses include Pre-Algebra, Pre-Geometry and Pre-Intermediate Algebra.  These courses will be taken for elective credit and the grade issued will be a Pass/No Credit.  This is an excellent opportunity to get a jump start for next year.

Summer School Registration will begin by completing the application online at www.lbschools.net/summer.  After the application is submitted, the student or parent will receive an immediate on screen confirmation that they have registered.  Two weeks after registering, parents and students will be able to view the courses that counselors have selected for your child to take during summer school.  If you would like to discuss the classes needed, please make an appointment with the counselor before May.  Please note that counselors will select summer school courses based on credit recovery needs, “a-g” completion needs or placement in a Math Bridge course.

Hello CAMS students and families. A few days ago, our school district notified parents and students of potential student protests and/or walkouts at some schools nationwide in response to the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida. It appears that at least three major student-led efforts are underway nationally, including on Wednesday, March 14; Saturday, March 24; and Friday, April 20.

This is a reminder that our top priority is to support the needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all. Free political expression and activity is one of the great privileges that we enjoy in this country. It is a privilege that should be taken seriously and used in a responsible way. Teachers and administrators here are always glad to see students become interested in any important issues facing our country, and are glad to encourage political participation by students, as long as it is done in a responsible way. We respect and support the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them and welcome the opportunity to work with any student or student group to discuss appropriate and creative ways to do so while at school.

Leaving campus during school hours to participate in political activity is not a safe and responsible way to work for change. We encourage you to talk to your children about how they may be feeling about this topic, and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. Students attempting to leave campus will not be held at school. But it’s important to know that disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable, and our usual expectations will remain in effect.

The most responsible way for students to pursue political change is to stay in school during school hours and pursue their political objectives here on campus in an acceptable forum, or wait until after-school hours to participate in political activities off campus. Opportunities for on-campus expression are being planned at all middle and high school campuses. In addition, Long Beach will be among the cities holding demonstrations nationwide on Saturday, March 24. The Long Beach event is planned for 10 a.m. at Bixby Park, located at 130 Cherry Ave. in Long Beach.

CAMS students who choose to participate in the walkout may proceed to the quad area where stations will be set up for students to sign petitions and/or posters honoring the victims for the duration of the walkout (10am-10:17am). Class will resume at 10:25am after nutrition. During lunch, ASB will also be hosting a student forum on school safety.

Thank you for helping us to keep our focus on teaching and learning in a safe and respectful environment.

Dr. Wendy Poffenberger

CAMS Principal

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directora, CAMS

Threat Prevention

Hello, Students and Families.

As we’ve seen in recent weeks, our schools are not immune to the potential threats that so many other schools nationwide have been dealing with.  We appreciate your heightened awareness of this issue, and we continue to encourage everyone in our school communities to report any suspicious information or activity that could impact school safety.

Threats to our schools are not harmless, and they are not funny.  They take valuable resources and time from our school district and the law enforcement agencies who work with us each day to keep our schools safe.  Threats cause anxiety for parents, students and staff, and they can disrupt the important work of teaching and learning.  Students who make threats face consequences that linger long after the threat is made.  We reiterate the Long Beach Police Department’s recent statement about such threats:

“The Long Beach Police Department takes all potential threats of violence very seriously and thoroughly investigates all reported incidents,” Chief Robert Luna said. “Making any kind of threat whether in person or online, is illegal and has serious consequences.”

Those consequences, as we also have seen in recent weeks, can include suspension, expulsion, arrest and potential prosecution under the law.  Students who make threats, even as a “joke,” can quickly find themselves facing the entire range of these consequences.

We urge parents to discuss this matter with their children.  In light of the senseless loss of lives in recent school shootings nationally, it is completely inappropriate and unacceptable to make threats, even as a “joke.”

We have appreciated everyone’s support during this challenging time.  Again, we continue to encourage students, parents and staff to immediately report any information that could impact the safety of others.  With your help, we can continue to provide safe schools and the best possible education for our students.

Sincerely,

Chris

Christopher J. Steinhauser
Superintendent of Schools

Prevención de amenazas

Hola, estudiantes y familias.

Sinceramente,

Chris
